Your Greenwheels cars are getting an upgrade
We’re updating the sharing technology in all your 2.900+ cars. That means the device with buttons inside the glove compartment – also known as the on-board computer – will disappear. Instead, you'll soon find a key- and cardholder in your car. Thanks to the upgrade of our sharing technology, everything will go via the app too, including locking and unlocking the cars. Here you'll read how we ensure you can hit the road even faster and smarter.
When will your car be upgraded?
As this is a large operation, we won’t be upgrading all cars at once. We’ll start this summer and it will take more than a year to get to our entire fleet. You’ll be notified by email when the cars in your city are due for an upgrade. Once all cars in your area have been upgraded, you’ll hear from us as well.
What will be different?
Locking and unlocking
There will no longer be a card reader in the car. When starting and ending your trip, you will unlock the car via the Greenwheels app – not with your OV chip- or Greenwheels card.
Do you want to lock and unlock the car during your booking? You can do so with the key, if present. If the car does not have a key, like our new ID.3, you will use the app.
Entering your personal PIN
From now on, you’ll enter your personal Greenwheels PIN directly after starting your reservation in the app. This will unlock the car. In the glove compartment, you’ll find the key and the fuel- or charging card in their holder on the left side. The on-board computer (the device with buttons) is no longer there.
The PIN for the fuel or charging card
The fuel and charging cards can still be found in the glove compartment, in the new key- and card holder. You’ll find the PIN for the card in the Greenwheels app. Need extra help? Watch the instruction videos for refuelling or charging with Greenwheels.
How to recognise Greenwheels cars with an upgrade?
From the exterior, you can easily recognise these cars as they no longer have a card reader behind the windscreen. In the glove compartment, you will only find the key and fuel- or charging card in the holder. The device with buttons (on-board computer) is no longer there.
In the app and on the website, you can identify the cars by a special icon: the mobile phone. This is shown on the map and in the car information, indicating that your car is ‘App only’.

In the coming period, the sharing technology in all Greenwheels cars is getting an upgrade. Thanks to the new sharing technology, you'll be able to make a better connection with your mobile phone. Is the car not unlocking or locking with the app because of bad internet connection? No problem. We'll ask you to connect to Bluetooth to lock or unlock the car. Read more about Bluetooth.
